Join the global Earth Charter Movement

"We stand at a critical moment in Earth's history, a time when humanity must choose its future. " The Earth Charter is a universal expression of ethical principles for a sustainable, just and peaceful future. It's a framework for action. It's a way to put all our little ideas and actions in our own communities together so we can see this as one global movement. "Let ours be a time remembered for the awakening of a new reverence for life, the firm resolve to achieve sustainability, the quickening of the struggle for justice and peace, and the joyful celebration of life."

I am working with the Florida Coalition for Peace and Justice on a statewide Earth Charter Initiative. We are “Illuminating the Earth Charter: Education, Inspiration and Action for a Sustainable World.” The program we are developing in North Central Florida invites the wider community to host activities related to each of the 16 Earth Charter principles. The “FutureFlash! Climate Challenge” engages young people — and those who care about their future — in online and real-world action. The “FutureFlash! Making the Game Club” is growing, with educators in the arts and sciences. We are partnering with Florida Gulf Coast University, currently the only Earth Charter affiliate in the US, adapting their Oral History Project and service learning in the local community — drawing on the global community. We are working with our local interfaith climate network to bring scripture and climate statements into this public education program.

We will host a planning intensive via Skype the week of July 27-31, with an interfaith climate conference call on Thursday, July 30, and an all-day workshop at the Sustainable Living Center in Hampton, FL on August 1.

Our goal is to go through the Earth Charter in 2015-16, one principle at a time, to find the people in our area who are helping to build a sustainable, just and peaceful future. They will provide a network of support for young people as they create action plans to solve global problems in their local community.

You can help to develop this program, and use it in your own community. God only knows what we can accomplish by the 20th Anniversary of the Earth Charter in 2020 — or the 50th Anniversary in 2050!

Thanks for reminding us that the Earth Charter is one of the most beautiful documents ever constructed. I have long felt it is worth taking the time for an indepth analysis and could easily be the nucleus of a study group.

Had a great talk with Mary Walch at Florida Gulf Coast University. They are an Earth Charter affiliate with lots of community outreach. We plan to replicate some of their activities in Gainesville and other parts of Florida in our statewide Earth Charter initiative.

Yes, the earth charter is a great resource and model for commit2respond. A way to organize globally and value the earth and bio-diversity, and not just economic growth.
